Every penguin at Frosty Lake could slide on the ice. Every penguin except Penny. Each time she tried, her feet wobbled and she flopped right onto her belly. “Splat!” The other penguins giggled. Penny laughed too, but inside she felt sad. “I wish I could slide just once without falling,” she whispered. Then she spotted old Gus gliding smoothly across the lake. “Gus, will you teach me?” she called.

Gus smiled warmly. “The secret is to bend your knees and lean forward,” he said. Penny tried. She bent her knees, leaned forward, and slid two steps before tumbling down. “Almost!” cheered Gus. She tried again and again. Each time she went a little farther. Her legs ached, but she kept going. On her tenth try, Penny slid five whole steps without falling. “I did it!” she squealed.
