Ruby woke up early, the sun peeking through her window and painting her room with golden light. She jumped out of bed, her heart buzzing with excitement. Today was a special day. She was going to the playground, and best of all, she would meet her cousin Finn for the very first time.

At breakfast, Ruby’s parents told her more about Finn. “He’s your age,” said Mom, pouring milk into Ruby’s cereal bowl. “And he loves to explore just like you!” Dad added with a smile. Ruby’s mind filled with images of adventures they might have together—climbing trees that stretched to the clouds or digging deep holes to find treasure in the sandbox. What games would they play? What stories would they share? Ruby couldn’t wait to find out!

Ruby arrived at the playground, her heart full of excitement. She quickly spotted Finn sitting alone on a swing, gently kicking the ground with his feet. His eyes were scanning the bustling playground, taking in all the new faces and noises. Ruby noticed that he looked a bit nervous and shy, like a small bird unsure about joining a flock. She paused for a moment, thinking about how Finn might be feeling in this big new place.

Instead of rushing over right away, Ruby stood still and took a deep breath. She thought about how she would feel if she were in Finn’s shoes—meeting new people can be scary sometimes! “I want to help him feel happy,” Ruby whispered to herself. With her mind set on making Finn feel welcome, she began walking towards him slowly, her bright smile leading the way like sunshine peeking through clouds.

Ruby approached Finn with a warm smile. She said, “Hi, I’m Ruby. Are you Finn?” Finn nodded shyly but smiled back. Ruby sat on the swing next to him and asked, “Do you like animals? I love elephants!” Finn’s eyes lit up as he replied, “Elephants are my favorite too!” Ruby clapped her hands in excitement and said, “Let’s pretend the climbing frame is an elephant adventure park!”

They ran over to the climbing frame together. Ruby led the way, saying it was their very own jungle safari. She pretended to be a brave explorer, while Finn imagined being an elephant keeper with special powers. They laughed and made elephant noises as they climbed up and down. With each step and giggle, Finn seemed more relaxed and happy. They discovered they both loved using their imagination to turn ordinary things into extraordinary adventures.

Ruby and Finn ran towards the climbing frame, their eyes sparkling with excitement. “Let’s pretend we’re explorers in the jungle!” Ruby exclaimed, her voice full of enthusiasm. Finn nodded eagerly, feeling more confident now. He imagined the climbing bars as giant vines swaying in a warm breeze. Together, they bravely swung from vine to vine, giggling as they went.

As they played, Finn told Ruby about a book he read about elephants that could paint with their trunks. Ruby listened intently, fascinated by his story. “Wow! Elephants are so smart,” she said with wide eyes. Finn grinned, feeling happy that Ruby was interested in what he liked. They continued their adventure, roaring like lions and stomping like elephants through the playground jungle, becoming fast friends along the way.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over the playground, Ruby and Finn sat together on the grassy hill. They watched as the last few children left with their parents. Ruby turned to Finn and said, “I’m so glad we played together today. You are really fun!” Finn smiled shyly but happily, saying, “I liked playing with you too. You’re a great friend.”

Ruby and Finn waved goodbye as their parents called them home. Ruby felt a warm feeling in her heart, knowing she had made a new friend by being kind and patient. As they walked away from the playground, both Ruby and Finn knew they would have many more adventures together. They had learned that understanding each other’s feelings made everything better, and that was the best part of their day.
